Chicago City Council

From dKosopedia

An elected assembly of fifty aldermen that considers legislative items for the Chicago city government. Chicago Aldermen are famous for their antics, and are often the target of federal investigations.

City Council is almost entirely Democratic with only the occasional Republican member. Power blocks in City Council are divided not so much by ideology, since they all tend to be moderate to liberal, but by race and ethnicity. Nonetheless, the white Aldermen along the Chicago's northern Lake Shore are usually considered the most Liberal.

2007 Elections

In the 2007 elections, unions like SEIU, backed a dozen challengers to pro-Daley incumbents, and about half of them won. The unions were mad that Daley had vetoed an ordinance requiring big box stores to offer decent benefits. (Source: Unions score key victories in council, Chicago Tribune, April 18, 2007.)
