Definition of Left

Ok, how do you define left wing and how do you define centrist? The Lib Dems are to the left of New Labour to be sure. Andrew Sylvia 18:03, 26 December 2008 (EST)

What "Left Wing" means varies from country to country, I suppose. I'm from the US, and the Lib Dems seem much more to the left than the Democrats.

Perhaps there is a better way to define the topic that isn't so subject to personal interpretation, like "socialist" or "liberal" or something like that.

P.S -- There's another reason I'd suggest we do this, since anarchism isn't necessarily a left wing ideology, if anything it shuns all wings. Anarcho-capitalism is fairly right wing economic social darwinism despite the fact that it rejects conservatism's other core values. Andrew Sylvia 13:11, 27 December 2008 (EST)

Continuing The Discussion

The two countries have different definitions of what liberal is, so I think that should be made clear if you're going to use "left wing". Dkosopedia doesn't seem to have any standards of any sort, so I guess in the end it doesn't matter, but I think it's best we write articles for as broad an audience as possible.

If i'm in the US, I'd assume that the Lib Dems are left wing from my point of view, and from your point of view, they aren't, and from your point of view, via the Political Compass, the Democrats are a right wing party.

I'd also disagree with your assessment that "left wing" can solely be defined by the redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor since you seemed to contradict yourself by not counting the Maoists, or for that matter, any Communist philosophy, into that structure. While their advocates may find common cause in opposing the status quo, Anarchy and Communism are polar opposites (one advocates no power structure of any kind, while the other advocates a power structure that extends to every facet of life), yet they are both "left wing"?
