Energy
From dKosopedia
Energy is the primary commodity for the global economy just as sugar was for the 18th century. A modern global economy is absolutely dependent on energy. Indeed cheap energy can mean relatively cheap "everything else" as the price of manufacturing and shipping is made cheaper as a consequence. Federally funded research and development on energy technologies in the United States is generally funneled through the Department of Energy. See also History of Energy.
