Gaza is a thin strip of land between Israel and Egypt with more than a million residents, mostly Palestinians. It was captured by Israel from Egypt in the 1967 war and remains controlled by Israel. There were very few Israeli Settlements in Gaza.Ariel Sharon the Likud Party prime minister of Israel proposed removing all Israeli settlements from Gaza, but faced opposition from his own party to the plan.

The last Israeli settlements have been removed, consolidating Gaza's status as the 'largest concentration camp on earth' for the Palestinians who subsist there.
