House Daily Summary
Today was a relatively light day in the House, and nothing that was a part of the Democrats’ “100 Hours” agenda was considered. The Democratic leadership will get to that tomorrow. In that spirit though, it will be a light day for us.
Do remember that, for most of the day, committee work was being done. Crafting legislation is no easy task and sometimes it requires that members be gone from the floor all day long. We encourage you to research what committees are currently engaged in.
The House got around to passing three symbolic resolutions, described below. There is little reason to “analyze” the text of the resolutions, so we’ll leave reading them up to you. _____
H.Res. 61 is a resolution commemorating the work and life of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. It passed the House by a vote of 418-0. It is hardly unexpected that no one wanted to oppose the legacy of Dr. King.
H.Res. 39 is a resolution congratulating the University of Florida Gators for their victory in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) title game, in which they defeated Ohio State 41-14. It passed the House by a vote 414-1, with three members voting present. The single Congressman voting “no” on the resolution was Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA). The three members voting present were Rep. John Barrow (D-GA), Rep. John Linder (R-GA) and Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA). If anyone has an idea why these members would be opposed to the resolution, leave a comment. Interestingly enough, almost all of the members of the Ohio delegation to Congress voted in favor of the resolution.
H.Res. 43 is a resolution commending the Boise State University Broncos football team for winning the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and completing an undefeated season. It passed the House by a vote of 415-0, with two members voting present. Again, Reps. Linder and Stark lead the crew of naysayers (or in this case, presentsayers).

In the Committees
The above link is to the consolidated congressional record of what occured in any House committees that had activity on this date.
- Note: This area's structure and format are still in development. The above header text will become a link to a culled and consolidated portions congressional record of the committees of the House that had activity on the date this page is about. This blurb here will also eventually have a format on how to link to the relevant committee articles in the Congressional Committees Project. I envision that the portions of the congressional record that will be at this link (formated similar to the floor portions of the record would be a also utilized (and with luck, maintained by those signing up for the various committees by that project.
