Introduction
Idaho, a.k.a. the gem state by trivialistas, became the 43rd state on July 3, 1890. According to the 2000 Census, Idaho has a population of 1,293,953, 39th in population size among the states.
Political History
Idaho was not always conservative. In 1896 Idaho became only the fourth American state to grant women the right to vote.
Political Culture
Idaho is one of the most reliably Republican states in the Union, and only one of two states (Utah is the other) where Mormons are the most numerous identifiable religious group. Idaho is known for its potatoes, but also for violent white supremacists who move there and tarnish the reputation of the decent people of the Idaho.
Idaho has not supported a Democratic candidate for president since 1964. Even in that election, Lyndon Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater by less than two percentage points. In 2004, George W. Bush carried Idaho by a margin of 38 percentage points and 68.4 percent of the vote, winning in 43 of 44 counties. Only Blaine County, which contains the Sun Valley ski resort, supported John Kerry. Idaho was only one of four states where a majority of voters apprived of Bush in an early 2006 Survey USA poll. The other three were Nebraska, Utah, and Wyoming. The entire state Congressional delegation is Republican.
