Introduction
Mississippi is a state in the Deep South known mostly for being one of the poorest states in the United States, regularly ranking at the very bottom of every statistical measure of economic and social health. It is among the most deeply divided states in the Union along race lines, and was the home to many of the most disgusting fights by the state government to protect segregation during the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
