Michigan, the wolverine state, was admitted into the Union as the 26th State on January 26, 1837. The state capital is Lansing, while its largest and second largest cities are Detroit and Grand Rapids.
This battleground state has an interesting mix of urban-rural that literally splits the state in two from the southwestern corner, through Lansing up to the “thumb:” urban below, rural above. The state, like many northern Midwest and Eastern states, has suffered a decline in population. The result has been the loss of four House seats over the last 30 years. With a large manufacturing base, Michigan is one of the key battleground states that has been hit especially hard by the loss of jobs during the Bush II recession.
In recent years, the state's strong industrial and union heritage has made the state lean Democratic in national elections. Michigan has supported Democrats in the last four presidential elections. In 2004, John Kerry narrowly defeated George Bush, winning Michigan's 17 electoral votes by a margin of 3 percentage points with 51.2% of the vote. Republicans' greatest strength is in the western, northern, and rural parts of the state, especially in the Grand Rapids area. Democrats are strongest in the east, especially in metropolitan Detroit.
To date, 97 citizens of Michigan have been killed in the War in Iraq.
