Narrative
Jefford suddenly announced his retirement in April 2005 after previously indicating he was running for re-election, citing health concerns. Bernie Sanders, Vermont's only congressman and a fellow independent, (also the only socialist in congress) is almost certain to seek the seat and the Democratic Party will almost certainly support him. Jim Douglas, Vermont's current Republican governor, has said he will not run for the seat.
