Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Affairs
Background
The Senate Subcommittee on European Affairs is a subcommittee of the Committee on Foreign Relations, a standing committee of the United States Senate. As a subcommittee of a Senate standing committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Affairs has legislative authority as well as oversight and housekeeping authority over matters within its jurisdiction. It considers, amends, and reports bills that fall under its jurisdiction, and may block legislation from reaching the Senate floor. SUBCOMMITTEE JURISDICTION:
The subcommittee deals with matters concerning the continent of Europe, including the South Caucasus and Central Asia. Its responsibilities include the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Matters relating to Greenland and the north polar region are also the responsibilities of this subcommittee.
This subcommittee's responsibilities include all matters, problems and policies involving promotion of U.S. trade and export; terrorism, crime and the flow of illegal drugs; and oversight over U.S. foreign assistance programs that fall within this subcommittee's regional jurisdiction.
