Maryland, whose motto is the 'free state', became the seventh state on April 28, 1788. Maryland's capital is Annapolis and it's largest city is Baltimore. John Hopkins University and the U.S. Naval Academy is located in Maryland.
Maryland has supported the Democratic candidate in the last four presidential elections. Maryland Senators and six of its eight Representatives in Congress are Democrats. Democrats hold super-majorities in the state Senate and House of Delegates.
John Kerry won the state's 10 electoral votes in 2004 by a margin of 13 percentage points with 55.9% of the vote.
To date, 52 Marylanders have been killed in the War in Iraq.
