Slovakia is a country in Central Europe, between Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic. The country has a population of 5.5 million people, with a significant Hungarian minority, and its capital is Bratislava.
Slovakia is the eastern part of what used to be Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia was created out of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I. After World War II, the country was dominated by the Soviet Union, but it regained autonomy after the Velvet Revolution of 1989, and reoriented itself towards the West. In 1993, Czechoslovakia split into two parts: the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Slovakia joined both NATO and the European Union in the spring of 2004.
After its split from the Czech Republic, Slovakia's first Prime Minister was Vladimir Meciar, who quickly became a dangerous authoritarian, but he lost power in 1998. In June 2006, the center-right government of Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda lost the election to a left-populist party led by Robert Fico.
