European Union
From dKosopedia
The European Union is a supranational organization of 27 member states in Europe that is commonly referred to as the "EU". Member states allow EU citizens to easily travel across member state borders and to work without the special permits normally required for foreigners. They may also vote in EU elections and local elections wherever they reside in the EU. Although the EU lacks a harmonized foreign policy or tax structure efforts are being made in that direction. EU citizens may also call upon the assistance of any EU member state embassy or consulsate while outside the EU.
A new constitution to accomodate its expanded members was signed by all member nations on October 29, 2004. But, the constitution was rejected by voters in France and The Netherlands.
The two newest members are Bulgaria and Romania, which joined on January 1, 2007.
