Joseph Stalin

From dKosopedia

Joseph Stalin was the Premier of the Soviet Union from 1924 to 1953.

Iosif (usually Anglicized as Joseph) Vissarionovich Stalin (Russian: Иосиф Виссарионович Сталин), original name Ioseb Jughashvili (Georgian: იოსებ ჯუღაშვილი; see Other names section) (December 21, 1879 - March 5, 1953) was an ethnic Georgian Bolshevik revolutionary who consolidated authoritarian socialist rule over the Soviet Union. Stalin is responsible for leading the Soviet Union during its rapid industrialization, its titanic miltiary struggle with Nazi Germany, its initial struggle with the United States in the Cold War, establishing a brutal authoritarian state, and killing millions of Soviets in political purges, forced labor, and famines.

Stalin became General Secretary of the Communist Party in 1922; following the death of Vladimir Lenin, he prevailed over Leon Trotsky in a power struggle during the 1920s and brutally consolidated his authority with the Great Purge, a period of severe repression which reached its peak in 1937, remaining in power through World War II and until his death in 1953. Stalin molded the features that characterized the new Soviet regime; his policies, based on Marxist-Leninist ideology, are often considered to represent a political and economic system called Stalinism, an ideology widely regarded as one of the foremost historical examples of totalitarianism.
