Responsibilities
The Subcommittee was established at the start of the 109th Congress to focus exclusively on ensuring that the United States is prepared for public health emergencies – whether deliberate, accidental, or natural. The Subcommittee Chairman is Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) and the Ranking Member is Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA). The Subcommittee has jurisdiction over a wide range of bioterrorism and public health issues including BioShield, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), immunizations, infectious diseases, pandemic flu, and vaccines.
