The U.S. Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Research, Nutrition, and General Legislation is one of four subcommittees of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry.
The Agriculture committee has delegated jurisdiction to this subcommittee over legislation on agricultural education and research, animal welfare, and legislation and federal programs relating to food, nutrition and hunger, commodity donations, food stamps, the national school lunch program, school breakfast program, summer food program for children, special milk program for children, special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children (WIC), nutritional programs for the elderly, and general legislation. Oversight responsibilities include the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, enforcement of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Redenticide Act, as well as the administration, implementation and enforcement efforts associated with the various programs mentioned above.
The current ranking Democrat is Patrick Leahy (VT), who is expected to take over its chair in 2007 from Rick Santorum (PA), the outgoing chairperson who was defeated in his bid for reelection in the 2006 mid-term elections.
