Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower was a U.S. Army officer who served as Supreme Commander of Allied forces in the European theatre duing the Second World War and a Republican politician elected the 34th President of the United States in 1953. Born on October 14, 1890 to an ethnic German family in Denison, Texas, Eisenhower is more often associated with Abilene, Kansas.

Eisenhower married Mamie Eisenhower (Mamie Geneva Doud) in 1916 and had two children by her. One of whom, John Eisenhower, served in the United States Army and served as U.S. Ambassador to Belgium. His son, David Eisenhower, for whom Camp David is named, married Richard Nixon's daughter Julie Nixon Eisenhower in 1968. Richard Nixon was elected Vice President when Eisenhower was elected President.

Kay Summersby may have been Eisenhower's wartime mistress.

As President, Eisenhower was a supporter of civil rights and a ballanced budget however he did not publicly condemn the hysterical communist witch-hunting of Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy.

A four acre site in front of the Department of Education building has been selected for the Eisenhower Memorial by the Eisenhower Memorial Commission.

Quotes

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron. -- Dwight Eisenhower, April 16, 1953

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower in a letter to his brother Edgar, November 8, 1954
