Responsibilities

This subcommittee handles environmental protection and cleanup legislation, such as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA or Superfund). It is also officially charged with regulating noise pollution and "homeland security aspects" of environmental issues.

Leadership

Albert Wynn of Maryland is the chair, John Shimkus of IL the ranking minority member.

In January 2007, Anthony Weiner (D-NY) requested Subcommittee hearings on efforts to remediate the Newtown Creek oil spill, located in Brooklyn near the Queens border. (Queens Gazette, 1/31/2007)
